Arthur Kennedy (governor)

Sir Arthur Edward Kennedy GCMG CB ( born April 5, 1809 in Cultra, Ireland, † June 3, 1883 on the ship Orient ) was a British colonial administrator and in this function, Governor of the British colony of Sierra Leone, Western Australia, Vancouver Iceland, Hong Kong and Queensland.

Life

Arthur Edward Kennedy was born in Cultra, a town in County Down in Ireland. He was the fourth son of Hugh and Grace Dorothea Kennedy ( née Hughes ) and was educated by a private tutor until he attended Trinity College from 1823 to 1824 in Dublin, where he met his predecessor as governor of Hong Kong, Richard Graves MacDonnell. From 1827 to 1837 he fought as an officer in Corfu and in British North America. In 1839 he married Georgina MacCartney, who died on October 3, 1874.

1851 Kennedy applied for a Colonial Office. He was appointed in May 1852 Governor of Gambia, shortly thereafter, however, the same to the Governor of Sierra Leone, so that he has not carried out his first official basically.

1854 Kennedy was promoted to Governor of Western Australia. He took this position in the following year. Many West Australians however, he was seen as autocratic despot. To protest against him, was held in August 1856 in Perth a public meeting. 1862 Kennedy resigned from office.

Already in 1863 he was reappointed governor of the colony of Vancouver Iceland. Because Vancouver Iceland was insignificant compared to Western Australia, Kennedy felt that transfer as a demotion. He reached the colony in March 1864, and left the office in October 1866 after the colony of British Columbia and Vancouver Iceland united with the United Colonies of Vancouver Iceland and British Columbia.

Kennedy returned to London and was knighted in December 1867. While he was 1868-1872 again governor of Sierra Leone, he was awarded the Order of the Bath and the Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George. From 1872 to 1877 he was the seventh Governor of Hong Kong. In this capacity he introduced the Hong Kong dollar, the cash Hong Kong is today. By 1883 Kennedy was Governor of Queensland; He died on June 3, on the return journey on the ship Orient in the Red Sea.

The district Kennedy Town in Hong Kong is named after Arthur Edward Kennedy.
