Arthur Laurents

Life

Laurent grew up in a Jewish family in the district of Flatbush of the New York district of Brooklyn. After his Bar Mitzvah he no longer practiced the Jewish faith.

Laurents first wrote several plays that had after the Second World War on Broadway Premiere. In the 1950s he wrote with Stephen Sondheim as lyricist and composer Leonard Bernstein as his most famous work: West Side Story. After the enormous success of West Side Story, he wrote with composer Jule Styne equal to his next blockbuster for Broadway: Gypsy. Sondheim wrote the lyrics again. Some of his plays have been adapted for cinema, including The Time of the Cuckoo 1955 by David Lean under the title Dream of my life ( Summertime ) with Katharine Hepburn in the lead role.

Even for Hollywood, he wrote several screenplays. His greatest successes were The way we were with Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford and The Turning Point, for which he was nominated in 1978 among others for an Oscar and a Golden Globe.

Other important screenplays were Rope (directed by Alfred Hitchcock ) and the adaptation of Françoise Sagan's Bonjour Tristesse (directed by Otto Preminger ).

Arthur Laurents was also one of the interviewees, the documentary The Celluloid Closet - Trapped in the Closet ( The Celluloid Closet, 1995).
