Arthur Lloyd Thomas

Arthur Lloyd Thomas (* 1851 in Chicago, Illinois, † 1924 in Salt Lake City, Utah ) was an American businessman and politician ( Republican).

Career

Thomas grew up in Pittsburgh and later married Helena Reinberg. He filled staff positions in the U.S. House of Representatives before he worked for eight years as Secretary of the Territory under the governors George W. Emery, Eli Houston Murray and Caleb Walton West. He was also a member of the Utah Commission. In April 1889 President Benjamin Harrison appointed him governor of the Utah territory. Regarding the Mormons seemed to be ambivalent Thomas, first favored the large extent by the Cullom Bill and later pardoned convicted polygamists. Two of his main concerns were the improvement of child education and irrigation projects to more land for settlement to opened. He was in 1895 an unsuccessful candidate for the Republican nomination for the office of the first governor of Utah. After the end of his term of office was Thomas from 1898 to 1914 served as postmaster of Salt Lake City. He also went to various companies, such as real estate development, mining and publishing.
