Arthur Lonergan

Arthur Lonergan ( born January 23, 1906 in New York, United States, † January 23, 1989 Los Angeles ) was an American art director.

Life

Lonergan had attended Columbia University and worked for several years as a lecturer in architectural history at New York University. Besides, he was still working as an architect at the New York School of Decoration and Design.

His film career he started in 1938 as an illustrator at the MGM. 1945 Arthur Lonergan established as a freelance art director. In this area, he designed the next 25 years Buildings for conventional entertainment film productions. Noteworthy were some of his scenes for sci-fi substances. In this genre he created the remarkable alien planet world in the '50s classic Forbidden Planet. For his buildings to the Hollywoodmelodram ... because no one is without sin, he was nominated for an Oscar in 1967. Besides his work for the cinema Lonergan designed the decorations on various episodes of American television series, including The Loretta Young Show, The Falcon, toppers, Life of Riley and Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

Arthur Lonergan was at times ( 1952-54 ) President of the Society of Motion Picture Art Directors and served, after his retirement from the movie business in 1971, the design consultant for the Disney theme park in Japan. Arthur Lonergan died on his 83rd birthday.
