Arthur Nikisch

Arthur Nikisch (Hungarian: Artúr Nikisch; born October 12, 1855 in Mosonszentmiklós ( Lébényi Szent- Miklós ); † January 23, 1922 in Leipzig) was a Hungarian conductor. He was considered an outstanding interpreter of the works of Anton Bruckner and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

Nikisch married in July 1885, the actress Amélie Heussner (Brussels 1862 - Berlin 1938). Your children are the legal scholar Arthur Philip Nikisch and the pianist, composer and band leader Mitja Nikisch.

Life

Nikisch studied at the Conservatory of Vienna, violin, piano and composition. Between 1872 and 1877 he worked first as a violinist in various orchestras, including the Vienna Court Opera ( Wiener Philharmoniker = ). From 1878 to 1889 he was first Kapellmeister of the Leipzig Stadttheater. His second conductor ( 1886-1888 ) was Gustav Mahler. On December 30, 1884 Nikisch conducted the premiere of Bruckner's 7th Symphony at Leipzig's New Theatre.

After living in Boston ( principal conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra ) and Budapest (Director of the Royal Hungarian Opera ), he became in succession by Carl Reinecke Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig in 1895; He led this office until his death. He also was appointed in the autumn of 1895 as chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic. Under his direction they took in 1913 as the first complete recording of a symphony, the Symphony No. 5 by Beethoven.

From 1902 to 1907 he was director of the Leipzig Conservatory.

In February 1906, he played for the Welte-Mignon reproducing piano as a pianist four of Brahms ' Hungarian Dances for piano role ( Nos. 1, 4, 5 and 6 ), and a Valse lente from Léo Delibes ' ballet Coppélia.

Nikisch was a good friend Alexander Frommer 's, the father of Harry Frommer man (1906-1975), the Comedian Harmonists founded in 1927. Nikisch taught little Harry from 1910 for several years at the piano.

On January 23, 1922 Nikisch died at the age of 66 years in Leipzig. He was interred at the Leipzig Südfriedhof ( Division II ).

Honors

Immediately after death Nikisch got a place in Leipzig, had at the last Nikisch usual, the name Nikischplatz. 1935 G Street 82 in Berlin -Grunewald was named to celebrate the 80th birthday of conductor Arthur Nikisch after him. In 1952 in Vienna Penzing ( 14th district ) was named the Nikischgasse after him. In 1971, the city of Leipzig donated the Arthur Nikisch award for young conductors.
