Arthur Whetsol

Arthur " Artie " Whetsol, also Arthur Whetsel written, (* 1905 in Punta Gorda, Florida; † January 5, 1940 in New York City, New York ) was an American jazz trumpeter, of the original line and then from 1928 to 1937 Duke Ellington band belonged.

Whetsol spent his childhood in Washington, DC, where he became friends with Ellington. He was a member of the original line of Duke Ellington's band, the quintet "The Washingtonians ". With Ellington, he went in September 1923 to New York to join the band of Elmer Snowden (first recordings in 1924 ). 1924 he gave the music on temporarily to to study at Howard University medicine so that he is not listening to the first Ellington recordings in November 1924.

In 1928 he was back in the band, where he worked on some of the most famous recordings of the "Cotton Club" - took part time band ( solos in "Black Beauty ", "Black and Tan Fantasy ," "The Mooche ," " Mood Indigo " ). His lyrical style contrasted with the time of Bubber Miley and Ellington served as a model for later occupations ( as his successor Harold Shorty Baker). In 1937 he left the Ellington orchestra for health reasons ( mental illness ).
