Arthur Yorinks

Arthur Yorinks ( born August 21, 1953 in Roslyn, NY ) is an American children's book author, playwright and theater director. The written and illustrated by Richard of Yorinks Egielski book Hey, Al was awarded the 1987 Caldecott Medal, the highest award for American children's books.

Life and work

Arthur Yorinks studied at the University Reform New School for Social Research and at the Hofstra New College. In 1979 he founded The Moving Theater, 1990, together with Maurice Sendak children's theater The Night Kitchen (named for Sendak's children's book In the Night Kitchen), which had its first opening in 1993.

Yorinks has so far written 16 books for children. His plays have been performed among others at the Kennedy Center ( So Sue Me) and at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center in New York ( It's Alive, 1994). For the much- performed operas The Juniper Tree and The Fall of the House of Usher by Philip Glass wrote the libretto Yorinks. Yorinks lives with his wife in Manhattan.
