Articles of Schwabach

The Schwabach Articles are one of the earliest Lutheran Confessions.

Originally, the term referred to were products of the Margrave George of Brandenburg -Ansbach on 14 June 1528 the citizens of Nuremberg to Schwabach under the name of Schwabacher Visitation article notes recognized as a basis for the introduction of the Reformation in his country.

Later, the name of 17 articles, a common confession of Ansbacher and Wittenberg theologians was. These articles were created after the protest of Speyer to a suggestion of the Margrave George of Brandenburg -Ansbach, who wanted to strengthen a shared commitment the alliance policy of the Lutheran estates of the Empire against Emperor Charles V.. The articles were written by Philipp Melanchthon in the summer of 1529 with the participation of Martin Luther. In the Convention to Schwabach from 16 to October 19, 1529 at the Gasthof Goldener Stern at Schwabacher marketplace they have been presented by the Saxon side, the deputies of the Upper German cities as federal conditions. The articles deal with the Trinity, Christology, original sin, the doctrine of justification, sacraments, ecclesiology and eschatology. The Schwabach Articles were together with the Torgau articles a basis of the Augsburg Confession.
