Artie Shapiro

Arthur " Artie " Shapiro ( born January 15, 1916 in Denver, Colorado, † March 24, 2003 in Los Angeles ) was an American jazz bassist.

Artie Shapiro grew up in New York and began his musical career at the age of 13 years as a trumpeter but switched to bass at age 18. In the early 1930s he worked at Wingy Manone and Joe Marsala, mid-1930s, he worked as a studio musician and was involved in recordings of the Original Dixieland Jass band, Bud Freeman, Chu Berry and Eddie Condon involved. In the 1940s he was a member of the orchestra of Paul Whiteman and played with Bobby Hackett in the jazz club Nick's in New York. Later he went to Hollywood, where he worked as a freelance musician and has accompanied Jack Teagarden, Charlie Ventura, Joe Sullivan, Artie Shaw, and after his military service from 1947 with Benny Goodman recordings.
