Description

Most are military or commercial extensions (eg airport) existing islands or, more recently, to tourist structures, such as Palm Jumeirah in Dubai. Also for land reclamation for settlement space, particularly in urban areas, artificial islands are built, such as the Venetian Islands in Miami from the 1920s or numerous artificial islands in the Bay of Tokyo.

Some artificial islands created by actions of the regulation of the waters, such as the Danube Island, or serve conservation projects, such as the island Nigehörn.
