Artigas Base

Base Científica Antártica Artigas (BCAA ) is the official name of the permanent base of the State of Uruguay in the Antarctic.

Founded on December 22, 1984 Antarctic research station located on the belonging to the South Shetland Islands King George Island. Thus, the removal of the station to the South Pole is 3104 km, up to the Uruguayan capital Montevideo is 3012 km. The commonly referred to as Base Artigas station is operated by the Instituto Antártico Uruguayan and works all year round. In winter it is occupied by 8 persons. During the summer, they can accommodate up to 60 people. The first head of the base was Omar Porciúncula.
