Artolsheim

Artolsheim is a commune with 930 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Bas- Rhin in the Alsace region.

Location

The village is located in the Rhine valley to the Territory road D 468 Between Artolsheim and the west of it located Hessenheim runs the Rhone-Rhine Canal.

Artolsheim is the commune with the furthest distance from the sea ( each 430 km to the Mediterranean and the North Sea ).

History

The history of the village is closely linked with that of the monastery Ebersmünster at Schlettstadt, which already owned a farm here before the 12th century. Accordingly, it was also already since the 10th century a church. In the Thirty Years' War, the town was devastated. Because it was feared a German offensive after the war broke out in 1939, then in 1940 actually took place, the population was evacuated in the Dordogne.

Economy

Important branches of industry are agriculture and small businesses. The construction of the eastbound side of the river channel favored the establishment of industries.
