Artrock

Art rock (English: art rock, actually German: Art Rock ) is a style of rock music that is closely related to the progressive rock. The boundaries between these two styles are fluid and contested. A distinguishing feature is that the more progressive rock oriented to the ways of composing classical music, while art rock, represents the approach to sophisticated production methods large forms and new visual representations. Even bands that strictly speaking do not play progressive rock, but added to their musical and lyrical concept progressive elements can be counted as art rock.

Art rock is a music genre which are attributable to numerous bands 1969-1977. Complex songwriting, often very long pieces with a playing time of up to 40 minutes, extended instrumental or solo parts, audio effects of all kinds and the pronounced penchant for concept albums characterize this style of music.

Art rock can be understood as an attempt to develop comparable pop and rock music of the 1960s to an art music with classical music. The roots of the art rock are to be sought in the late 1960s. This concept albums by the Beach Boys and the Beatles were just as influential as the inspired baroque music and blues music of Procol Harum, inspirations through the psychedelic rock of the early Pink Floyd, the combination of rock and classical music by The Moody Blues, instrumental virtuosity of Cream and Jimi Hendrix.

One originated in West Germany variant of the art rock is referred to as Krautrock. For this is especially characteristic against the British art rock that it is almost entirely free from the influences of blues and classical music and the musicians worked with the means of electronic music early and intense. Important representatives of this style include Amon Düül, Can, Faust, Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream. Krautrock also has the music scene of the late 1980s and 1990s a lasting impact, such as the drum and bass or techno.

Also in the GDR was art rock popular in the second half of the 1970s. In particular, the bands lift, electra and Stern Combo Meissen devote to this day in this style.
