Artur Boruc

Artur Boruc [ artur bɔruts ] ( born February 20, 1980 in Siedlce, Poland) is a Polish football goalkeeper.

Club career

In Poland

His career began in 1998 Boruc in his hometown at Pogoń Siedlce. Only a year later Boruc joined Legia Warszawa, where he was for the time being, however, only used in the reserve team and was loaned out even half a year to Dolcan Ząbki who then played in the 2nd Polish League. After his return, he played in March 2002 for Legia his first game in the Ekstraklasa, the first Polish league. This season, he was also able to celebrate his first major title when he was Polish champion Legia Warszawa with.

In the second half of the 2002/ 03 Boruc became the regular keeper of Legia and played from there on a regular basis in the Ekstraklasa. In June 2004, he scored the only goal so far in his professional career when he converted a penalty in a 6-0 victory over Widzew Łódź.

In Scotland

On 20 June 2005 he was initially hired for a year at the Scottish giants Celtic. This lending transaction involved a purchase option, the Celtic also used to Boruc to 2009 under contract. On January 5, 2008, he extended his contract with the " Green-Whites " finally to 30 June 2011.

His time at Celtic was been very successful for Boruc. He was three times to win the Scottish championship in a row and peaked in the seasons 2006/ 07 and 2007/ 08 with Celtic respectively the knockout stages of the Champions League.

In Italy

In July 2010 he signed a two -year contract with the ACF Florence. After a cruciate ligament injury of Sébastien Frey was Boruc goalkeeper of ACF Florence because of strong performances. In summer 2012, his expiring contract was not renewed and Boruc was initially without a club.

In England

End of September 2012 Boruc has been committed by the English first division team FC and Southampton. He signed a contract until the end of the season 2012/13.

National team career

His debut in the Polish national was Boruc on 28 April 2004 in a goalless draw against Ireland.

After Jerzy Dudek failed due to an injury early in the season 2005/ 06, Boruc denied the last World Cup Qualifiers and played a key role with its above-average performance that for the Football World Cup 2006 qualifying Poles in Germany. Boruc supplied with Jerzy Dudek a similar battle in the run-up to the 2006 World Cup as Jens Lehmann, Oliver Kahn. Artur Boruc was eventually nominated by the then national coach Paweł Janas as number one for the World Cup. Janas even decided against Jerzy Dudek, which resulted in considerable discussion in the Polish media, which were further increased after the opening defeat at the World Cup with 0-2 against Ecuador. Poland already retired from in the first round, as the team lost against Germany and fell just one victory against Costa Rica on third place in the preliminary round group.

At the 2008 European Championships in Austria and Switzerland Boruc also attended the first goalkeeper in the Polish national team. However, Poland dropped out after only one draw and two defeats in the preliminary round.

Controversy

2006 saw the Catholic Boruc a stir because he had tried in February in a game at Rangers despite the same prohibition to provoke the traditionally Protestant fans of the host with a sign of the cross. Boruc was awarded in August a fine of an unspecified amount, and an entry in his criminal record. His club Celtic, whose constituency is traditionally Catholic, but drew no conclusions from this incident.

On 5 May 2007, it came to a confrontation between Boruc and the Protestant Rangers fans. After the 0-2 defeat by Celtic at the Rangers themselves Boruc Celtic borrowed a flag from a Celtic fan and ran with it all over the place, waving the angry Rangers fans to gloat. After the game he said, though, that he was just happy simply because Celtic was despite the defeat against the Scottish champion Rangers and he did so only bring his joy to express the Rangers fans saw this action, however, as another provocation in the direction of their clubs and have since been definitively not good to talk to Boruc. In the Celtic fans to Boruc but not only since this action did, however, a crowd favorite.

Others

Since his time at Celtic Boruc holds in some fan circles due to its parades the nickname " Spaceman " hold. Because of his Catholic faith, he is also called " The Holy Goalie ".

In 2007 he was chosen by the Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, the third best goalkeeper in the world.

On November 2, 2013, was overcome after 17 seconds in the Premier League match against Stoke City keeper Asmir Begovic from touching down in front of him by a kick. The game ended 1-1.

Artur Boruc has been married to his wife Katarzyna since 2000. With it, he has a son who was born on 11 June 2008 during the 2008 European Football Championships.
