Artur Ivens Ferraz

Artur Ivens Ferraz [ ɐɾtuɾ aivɐns fɯʁaʃ ] ( born December 1, 1870 in Lisbon, † January 16, 1933 ) was a Portuguese general, politician and Prime Minister.

Military career

The nephew of Africa researcher Roberto Ivens was after attending the Polytechnic School graduate of the military school, where he was initially trained as an officer of artillery. In 1904 he was on maneuvers with the British army commander of the Portuguese contingent. After attending the Staff College, he later became a professor at the cadet school.

During the First World War he was in France commander of the troops of the Expeditionary Force who supported the British armed forces. Between 1919 and 1922 he was military attaché at the embassy in London. In this role he was also representative in disarmament conferences of the League of Nations. In 1922, he was Head of Cabinet of the High Commissioner in Mozambique. From May to November 1926, he was finally as General himself acting governor of Mozambique. From 1927 to 1928 he was commander of the Central Military Academy.

Military dictatorship ( 1926-1932 )

After his return from Mozambique, he was on August 26, 1927 First Minister of Trade and Communications in the Cabinet of António Oscar de Fragoso Carmona. He was then on January 5, 1928 Colonial Secretary. On February 16, 1928 his appointment was made to the Minister of Finance.

During the military dictatorship, he was finally himself on July 8, 1929 as the successor to José Vicente de Freitas Chairman of the Ministry (Presidente do Ministério ) Prime Minister. In this role, he took over temporarily the Ministries of Education ( November-December 1929), Foreign Affairs ( 1929), Internal Administration (July 8, 1929 to January 21, 1930 ), colonies and finance. The Office of the Prime Minister he held until his replacement by Domingos da Costa e Oliveira on January 21, 1930.

He was then Administrator-General of the Army and President of the League of the veterans. General Ivens Ferraz was finally from 1931 until his death in Chief of the General Staff. In this role he was also editor of the military newspaper Revista de Artilharia and Revista Militar.

During his military and political career, he has won numerous domestic and foreign orders. His memoir "A ascensão de Salazar de seis meses de governo Memórias do general Ivens Ferraz ," published posthumously in 1988.
