Life

Even as a child, Lundkvist dealt with literature. He read a lot and frequently visited the school library. He closed for the time being from only the six years of primary school, but later graduated from the Community College in Stockholm. Lundkvist wanted early writers and sent his work to various publishers and newspaper editors. Some of these early works were accepted by them and paid.

When he had moved to Stockholm in 1926, he came into contact with other young writers who were either already known as Harry Martinson, Ivar Lo - Johansson, Karin Boye, Sven Stolpe and Eyvind Johnson or only trying to make a name for himself. Lundkvist 1928 debuted with the poetry collection Glöd ( German Glut). Its aims were to renew the language and to create a new cross-border literary genre. The result was a special interest in contemporary art, especially Surrealism, which was reflected in his books about Goya and Bosch. In 1929 he published as part of the modernist writer squad Fem unga ( German Young Five ) contained the same anthology, the modernist poetry and prose. Fem unga existed alongside Erik Lundkvist from Asklund, Josef Kjellgren, Gustav Sandgren and Harry Martinson.

Lundkvist was very productive. In addition to poetry and travelogues he wrote historical novels and short stories, a total of about 90 books and several hundred articles in newspapers and magazines. His works have been translated into over 30 languages. As an influential member of the Swedish Academy and their Nobel Prize Committee, he played for many years an important role in directing international attention to unknown talented writers at home and abroad. He promoted mainly French and Spanish-speaking writers such as Pablo Neruda, Gabriel García Márquez, Camilo Jose Cela Claude Simon or who owe him their Nobel Prize. Self-taught, he learned to read with the help of dictionaries, English, Spanish and French and to speak and translated and reviewed works of these writers from Spain, Latin America and South Africa. He also was a member of Stockholm - Tidningen, Dagens Nyheter, the cultural magazine Ord och picture or the journal Bonnier Litterära Magasin. With his wife undertook the meanwhile significant poet travels all over the world, including to India, Egypt, Spain and South America. For all trips resulted literary works. The collection of poems Agadir reflects the common experiences during the severe earthquake in Agadir 1960.

Artur Lundkvist was declared opponent of the Cold War and fought for good relations with the Eastern bloc countries. In the magazine Tredje ståndpunkten he published in 1947 together with Werner Aspenström a commemorative publication for the 30th anniversary of the Russian Revolution, combined with a tribute to Stalin ( The third position ). At times, he was in the Friendship Society Sweden - GDR and active in the Swedish Peace Committee, the Swedish section of the World Peace Council.
