Aru flying fox

Pteropus aruensis is an extremely rare or already extinct species of bats authentics ( Pteropodini ) by the Indonesian Aru Islands. The species status is disputed.

Features

The front head is gray, black and yellowish white spotted. The mind is rusty. The lower mandible is dark rust-colored. The rust-red throat is mottled rust- brown or black. The back is yellowish white with versprenkelten black hair. The abdomen is black with rust- yellow or rusty-brown hair. From the center of the chest along the center of the stain darker brown to black.

Taxonomy and Status

Pteropus aruensis was originally described as a subspecies of Pteropus melanopogon. 2001 argued the zoologist Wim Bergmans that there is a unique species Pteropus aruensis. However, this is disputed by zoologists Kris Helgen, the aruensis Pteropus and Pteropus keyensis considered cognate. The taxon was long known only from an old male that was collected before 1867 by ODOARDO Beccari and now in the Museum für Naturkunde (Berlin) is located. During an expedition to the island Kobroor in October / November 1992, the Australian zoologist Patricia Woolley found in a Køkkenmøddinger at Namara a single toothless jaw that could belong to this type. Since the hunting pressure on the Aru Islands is very high, but there is also the possibility that this species is already extinct. The IUCN lists them in the category of " critically endangered ( possibly extinct ) ".
