Arua District

Arua is a district (municipality) in northern Uganda with 855 055 inhabitants ( 2002). Like almost all 78 districts of Uganda, he is named after its chief town. On 1 July 2005, the northeastern part of Arua was cleaved and the new district Koboko formed.

The Arua district is located in north-western Uganda, bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan. The cross-border trade plays an important role in the economy Aruas. Idi Amin, the Ugandan dictator from 1971 to 1979, was born in Arua. From Arua came from during the Second Congo War, Ugandan forces in the DRC, where they participated in the looting of Congo's resources. Arua itself is peaceful and remained on the activities of the Rebel Army Lord's Resistance Army in northern Uganda largely spared.

Economy

After the arid 90s with an annual rainfall average of only 274 mm and a dry year in 1999 as a low point in the decade 2000 to 2009 the region rainfed agriculture was possible. The average rainfall was as high as 716 mm below of the years 2003/2004. The wettest year was 2001 with 1282 mm and the driest 2007 with 410 mm. The tendency to fall rain event grew and culminated in the flash flood of 22 October 2005, 382 millimeters of precipitation.

In the region of Arua, the majority of the rain falls mostly in the second half. Typical are a dry January and a sparse durchfeuchteter February. The rain measurements of the years 1973 to 1978 show but only for the year 1978, a similar profile. This period brings it only to a yearly average of 209 millimeters. In the years 1973-1977 Arua was still plagued by a chronic translucent drought.
