Arundel Castle

Arundel Castle is a castle in the town of Arundel in West Sussex. The name of Arundel is composed of the name of the River Arun and the Old English word del (river).

Arundel Castle is one of the best preserved medieval castles and one of the most impressive castles in Britain. Arundel Castle was built in the 11th century in the time of Edward the Confessor in typical construction fortress with battlements and drawbridges and completed under Roger de Montgomerie, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury. Since it was a befitting seat of several noble families ( with brief interruptions by the crown).

Originally, the castle was built as a motte in a motte and should protect the river mouth against invaders. Over the centuries it was extended to the castle and rebuilt several times.

Today it is the residence of the Duke of Norfolk and his family. The majority of the castle can be visited for an entrance fee. The only exceptions are the private rooms.
