Arusha Accords

The Arusha Agreement called a peace agreement between the Rwandan civil war parties. It was signed on 4 August 1993.

After about two and a half years of civil war in Rwanda, the two warring parties met with representatives of the African Union organization (OAU - Organization of African Unity, the forerunner of today's AU) in the Tanzanian city of Arusha in order to negotiate a peace agreement.

On one side were the rebels of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF ) under Major General Paul Kagame and its political arm, the CND ( Conseil national pour le développement ). The English RPF had developed in the eighties of the 20th century. After the declaration of independence of the former Belgian colony of Rwanda, some political unrest and the formerly worn by the colonial power elite of Tutsi emerged was replaced. Therefore, many people fled to Uganda and formed the RPF.

On the other side of the demilitarized zone ( 1993 ), the French-speaking, hutu - dominated government forces of then-President Juvenal Habyarimana and the MRND, the ruling party stood. In the Arusha Peace Agreement, a ceasefire, the formation of a transitional government was agreed initiated, decided the demobilization of armies and other peace operations.

Since not see the African Union will be able to monitor peace in Rwanda, a UN contingent was requested. Result was the formation of UNAMIR.
