Arusha

Region

Arusha is a city in north- eastern Tanzania and the capital of the Arusha Region. Named the city is named after a living in the region of the Masai people. The city has 341 155 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2005). Given the population growth in the past few years and the approximately 100,000 commuters estimates the city administration that nobody more than 500,000 people in the city during the day.

Location

Arusha is situated nearly 90 km south-west of the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro at 1,400 m altitude. Just north of the small Arusha National Park is the 4,565 m high extinct volcano Meru, and located at its foot Ngurdoto crater.

Political role

Economy

Since the 1970s, the population has increased sevenfold. Today is the center of Arusha Tanzanian tourism, which is also the major economic sector. Due to the many safari tourists who come to Arusha, the city on the basis of Dar es Salaam in the vernacular is sometimes jokingly called it Dar Safari. In addition to Dar es Salaam Arusha is one of Tanzania's most important industrial centers (mainly raw material processing, particularly coffee, cereals, sisal, kapok, jute and coir, for some years growing cut flowers for export).

Infrastructure

The city has good transport links, including a regional airport. Kilimanjaro International Airport is located about 50 km towards the eastern neighboring town of Moshi. In addition, Arusha is theoretically accessible by train; the city is the terminus of the railway line from Dar Es Salaam. However, the passenger is already several years out of service.

Arusha is also known for the film Hatari! , With Hardy Krüger and John Wayne. The favorite cafe of the two is located near the Clock Tower.
