Arved Fuchs ( born April 26, 1953 in Bad Bramstedt ) is a German polar explorer and author. He became known through numerous television documentaries and photo essays.

Life

After school Arved Fuchs completed an apprenticeship in the merchant marine. Subsequent studies in marine engineering at the Fachhochschule Flensburg, he broke off the intermediate examination.

Since 1977, numerous expeditions have taken him especially in Arctic areas. In 1979 he traveled to the west coast of Greenland for the first time. Fuchs ' project in 1980, within walking distance to the North Pole, failed at first; nine years later he was able to successfully carry out this project. In 1983 he crossed on the route of the Alfred Wegener Expedition of 1930, the Greenland ice sheet. Since 1989 Fox has the expedition ship Dagmar Aaen.

He is one of Germany's ambassador to the United Nations International Decade of Biodiversity and Climate Forest honorary ambassador of Climate Forest Foundation.

Arved Fuchs is not related to the also become known for polar trips Vivian Fuchs.

Expeditions (a selection)

In addition to a seventy -day crossing of Greenland by dogsled (1983 ) on the trail of polar explorer Alfred Wegener and a winter circumnavigation of Cape Horn with a folding boat (1984 ) undertook fox more spectacular expeditions. 1989 came the first German Fuchs with the international expedition " Icewalk " (which included Robert Swan was ) walk to the North Pole. In the same year led another expedition together with Reinhold Messner from Patriot Hills base camp on the Filchner - Ronne Ice Shelf to the South Pole, and as a continental crossing on to McMurdo Station in Antarctica. This ensured Fox in 1989 as the first man to both poles within just one year on foot.

Since 1991, he transferred his ambitions primarily on the water, built the Dagmar Aaen Haikutter for trips in Arctic areas around, with whom he had many times since the move - including around America ( 1995-1996), through the Northeast Passage (2002) and the Northwest Passage (1993 and 2003/ 2004). For the Northeast Passage succeeded Arved Fuchs thanks to the artistic support of the expedition artist and sailors Rainer Ullrich to document his own expedition in pictures:

1997/98 expedition "Arctic Passages ", where Fuchs had to ascend a hot air balloon on Spitsbergen among others. Wintering his ship Dagmar Aaen in Scoresby Sound in East Greenland.

With a replica of an original lifeboat ( James Caird ) he lived in 2000 after the historic bailout of Sir Ernest Shackleton, by sailing through Antarctic waters to the island of South Georgia and then crossed on foot. 2007 Arved Fuchs handed the James Caird II to the International Maritime Museum Hamburg.

On 9 June 2009 Fox started the project Arctic dawn a new expedition to Northwest Greenland. With the sailing ship Dagmar Aaen the 56 -year-old from Hamburg stood out to sea and is planning to follow a historic expedition from 1881 to 1884 and to drive new ice-free regions of the Arctic.
