Arvidsjaur

Arvidsjaur ( umesamisch: Árviesjávrrie ) is a place ( tätort ) in the historic Lapland province and the province of Norrbotten County. He is also the capital of the Swedish municipality of the same name.

History

In 1607 a church was built in Arvidsjaur, which was to serve the missionary work of the seeds. The place was first settled permanently in 1757 by Swedish settlers.

Besides the village there is a lake with the same name. In the church today are still around 20 families of seed according to the traditional way of life.

Traffic

The Arvidsjaur Airport connects the village, inter alia, with Stockholm and in the winter timetable 2011/12 two weekly flights to Hahn in the Hunsrück, Hanover and Stuttgart.

Arvidsjaur is located on the Silver Way ( National Highway 95) and the Inlandsvägen ( European route 45). Road links exist towards Sorsele, Jokkmokk, Arjeplog, Älvsbyn and Boliden. There is a daily bus to Stockholm. More buses to exist: Arjeplog Bodo, Gällivare - Kiruna, Älvsbyn -ground Luleå and Sorsele - Storuman - Östersund.

The Inland Railway is in Arvidsjaur a train station with connections in the summer schedule to Ostersund and Gallivare. On some summer weekends runs a steam train to Slagnäs. There is also a branch line to Jörn on the railway line floor -Stockholm ( Stambanan genome övre Norrland ). On this route the traffic was set up on the section between Arvidsjaur and Nordlunda in 1990. In driving, with bicycle track cars for tourists were offered during the summer months by 2009; then the trolley infrastructure was dismantled.

Attractions

The Lappstaden ( seeds City), located in the city center, is a well-preserved about 80 wooden houses from the 17th century church existing village. Here dwelt the seeds when they traveled from far away to comply with their church duty, which required to attend a certain number of religious services every year. Once a year, on the last weekend in August, the buildings are still used today, when the Great General Meeting, will be held here.

In the local museum, the former vicarage ( Gamla Prästgården ), craftsmanship is offered from the region.

It will take place boat trips on the lake Storavan. The Storforsenist one of Europe's largest whitewater. Also, the K - 4 fighter regiment of the Swedish Army - stationed in Arvidsjaur - offers guided tours through the woods.
