Ary Scheffer

Ary Scheffer ( born February 10, 1795 in Dordrecht, Netherlands, . † June 15, 1858 in Argenteuil, Val- d'Oise Dept. ) was a French painter of Dutch origin.

Life

Scheffer was the son of the painter Jean -Baptiste Scheffer (1765-1809) and his wife, the miniature painter Cornelia Lamme. The painter Henry Scheffer was his brother. Scheffer came with his family to The Hague in 1797 and lived in from 1808 to 1810 in Amsterdam.

With 17 years Scheffer in 1812 moved to Paris and became a pupil of Baron Pierre Narcisse Guérin. In his studio Scheffer was also influenced by Guérins students Théodore Géricault and Eugène Delacroix in his style. With its picture -sacrifice of the Burghers of Calais, he made his debut at the Salon of 1819.

At the age of 63 years Ary Scheffer died on 15 June 1858. Nearly the entire estate of the artist is stored in the "Museum Ary Scheffer " in Dordrecht.

The sculptor Cornelia Scheffer (July 29, 1830 in Paris † December 20, 1899 ibid ) is his daughter.

A student was Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi who created the Statue of Liberty in New York.
