Location and data

Arzachena is located on the SS 125, 25 km from Olbia, ferries to the mainland, and as far from Santa Teresa Gallura, ferries to Corsica away. Arzachena is located in the Gallura near the Costa Smeralda and the Gulf Baia di Arzachena, 83 m above sea level. The nearby towns are Luogosanto, Lura, Olbia, Palau, Sant'Antonio di Gallura, Tempio Pausania. Arzachena has a station on the narrow gauge railway line Sassari - Palau, which is served in the summer months from Trenino Verde.

Belongs to this community the Costa Smeralda, which is rich in bays, beaches and granite gaffs and at the tourist resort of Porto Cervo is. Near Arzachena are many remains of protonuraghischen and the Nuraghic. Of interest is the ancient Nuragic Malchittu with some round huts and Nuraghenresten, also from the 10th century BC native temple Malchittu. The local bizarre Trachytverwitterungen and archaeological sites, which are often unique to the island, meant that for a time was long spoken of a Arzachena culture. Today it is clear that the monuments are merely variants within the Sardinian cultures.

Some sites can be visited against admission. These include, inter alia:

  • Albucciu, Nuraghe
  • Coddu Vecchiu, giants grave
  • La Prisgiona, Nuraghe
  • Li Lolghi, giants grave
  • Li Muri, place of worship with stone boxes
  • Malchittu, Megarontempel

In Roman times, here the Turibulu (m) Major lag ( Turibulum = incense altar).
