Arzamas
Arzamas (Russian Арзамас ) is a Russian city in the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. With 106 362 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) it is the third largest city in the oblast.
Arzamas is located on the Tjoscha, a right tributary of the Oka, 112 km south of the city of Nizhny Novgorod. The nearest town is Perewos, located 51 km northeast of Arzamas.
History
The town was first mentioned in the second half of the 16th century as a fortress. In the 17th century, the place became one of fastest, there he was at that time in the vicinity of important trade routes. 1719 Arzamas received city rights, and in 1779 became county seat.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, a number of church buildings were built in Arzamas, many of whom have been preserved until today. For this reason, the city of Arzamas is considered one of the most magnificent among the Russian cities of comparable size. Among other things there are in the city, built in 1845 Nativity Church ( Церковь Рождества Христова ) of the famous architect Konstantin Thon.
On June 4, 1988 Arzamas hit the headlines when a loaded train with explosives exploded in the city. The disaster claimed 91 lives.

Economy
Companies are mainly handicrafts, leather and weaving industry, manufacturing of spare parts for the automobile industry and manufacturing medical products. Arzamas is today one of the leading industrial cities of the area.
The Russian car manufacturer GAZ operates a plant in Arzamas.
