History

The club was founded in 1919 by employees of the retailer Casino as Amicale de la Société casino then in Association Sportive Stéphanoise ( according to the city's nickname - Étienne and Stéphane are synonyms) renamed and adopted in 1933 its present name ( in France shortly: l' ASSE ) to. The club colors are green and white, which is why the club also, long before the same party, as Les Verts (The Greens) is called.

The first football team wears for many years from their home games at the Stade Geoffroy- Guichard, which has a capacity of 35,600 spectators. She is coached by Christophe Galtier that Alain Perrin replaced mid-December 2009. Club president Bernard Caiazzo. (August 2013)

League membership

The AS Saint- Étienne was the highest division (Division 1 since 2002 Ligue 1 called ) from 1938-1943, 1944-1962, 1963-1984, 1986-1996, 1999-2001 and again since 2004. Even if the wedding of the association ( in the 1960s and 1970s ) already lags a while: No club has more French championship (10 in number) obtained as the Stéphanois, and also in terms of the number of Cup success is the ASSE as dazzling. From the fans has developed over the years a " cordial dislike " against the current very successful rivals Olympique Lyon from the relatively obvious.

Rise and Fall

From the last third of the sixties, the ASSE dominated the French League football. Parallel to the eighth championship success within twelve years of the club in 1976 reached in Glasgow's Hampden Park, the final of the European Cup of Champions against Bayern Munich - and lost it 0-1. In this match the Stéphanois met once each under the crossbar ( Dominique Bathenay ) and on the inside of the post (Jacques Santini ) of the Munich box. Since the Torgebälk at the time was still square, crossed the ball in both cases, not the line, and so Sepp Maier was indeed beaten, but Bayern still won to nil. Today everyone knows in Saint- Étienne, what is meant when someone from " les poteaux scarves " ("the square post" ) speaks. Despite the defeat, the team was received the next day on the Champs Elysées in Paris as far the only French club team by a huge crowd.

This moderate success has been the ACES to the new " favorite club in the nation," in which the football front for a long time was only moderately popular, and even beyond the country's borders; as the British pop band Saint Etienne, named after the club. For the city, which had to simultaneously digest a crisis due to mine closures and bankruptcies of several large employers, the club became the link. In the 1980s, it was, however, silent about the record champions: 1981 followed the last significant title win. The system " ACES " suddenly had sand in the gears. A year later, in 1982, was of slush funds mentioned for the first time. Then there was a sporting descent, key players like Platini and Lopez left the club. Already in 1983 rose les Verts after 22 years Erstligazugehörigkeit to the second division from. What followed was a roller coaster ride, which was characterized by more lows than highs. The so-called " passport forgery affair " ( affaire of faux passeports ) in which it was in the late 1990s to fake travel and player passes, led to the conviction of Vice-President Gérard Soler, also it came in 2001 to point deductions for the team and relegation to Division 2.

Meanwhile, the ASSE has stabilized again and again since then occupied a respectable places in the top French league. At the end of the 2009/10 season ranked St. Etienne the first non- relegation zone. 31 years after the last winning a national title put Saint- Étienne in April 2013 in the final of the French League Cup by - a trophy that the ASSE had hitherto been lacking in their stately collection.

Coach and President

Probably next to the " talent " continuity of staff in the club one of the secrets of the great successes of ASSE: in the period in which les Verts all their titles - with the exception of the Cup victory in 1962 - won, had only four coaches total of 40 years in Office, three of them previously also been players in Saint- Étienne - and in parallel it took all of two club presidents together on 41 years of service.

President Pierre Guichard (1927-1943, 1950-1952 and 1959-1961) Roger Rocher (1961-1982)

Coach Ignace Tax, 1943-1950 Jean Snella, 1950-1959 and 1963-1967 Albert Batteux, 1967-1972 Robert Herbin, 1972-1983, 1987-1990 and 1997/98

Women's team

The women's soccer division of AS Saint- Étienne was disbanded in 1977. Then, the Racing Club de Saint- Étienne was founded, whose teams returned in 2009 under the umbrella of AS, initially under the name of Saint- Étienne Loire Feminin and again from 2010 as ASSE.

The team plays well in 2012/13 in Division 1 Feminin, the highest women's soccer league in France. 2011 won the players the Coupe de France féminin, the French club trophy.
