Asa Griggs Candler

Asa Griggs Candler ( born December 30, 1851 in Villa Rica, Georgia, † March 12, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia) was an American businessman who mainly through the sale of Coca -Cola had success. He was also mayor of Atlanta.

Candler began his career as owner of a pharmacy. In 1887 he bought the Coca -Cola recipe from its inventor John Stith Pemberton in 2300 for U.S. dollars. The success of Coca -Cola earned him a fortune.

In 1892 he founded the Coca -Cola Company. A year later, let Candler Coca -Cola protect as a trademark and marketed its product in 1895 throughout the United States and since 1896 also in neighboring countries.

Candler was a member of the Evangelical Methodist Church. This he donated one million dollars and a lot of Emory University, so that they could move from Oxford to Atlanta. The Emory 's School of Theology bears his name. Even for the later Emory Hospital (English Emory Healthcare) Candler donated millions.

1917 Candler retired from the company and became mayor of Atlanta ( 1917-1919 ). In January Asa Candler turned over the business to his son Howard. At Christmas of the year Asa Candler bequeathed his relatives 90 % of the voting shares up to seven pieces. However, in 1919, sold Howard Candler behind her father's back, the Coca -Cola Company to a consortium led by Ernest Woodruff and Eugene Stetson for $ 25 million more. Candler suffered a stroke in 1926 and died in 1929.

According to him, the Candler Field is named at the Atlanta airport.
