Asahifuji Seiya

Asahifuji Seiya (Japanese旭 富士 正 也, born July 6, 1960 in Tsugaru, Aomori Prefecture as Suginomori Seiya (杉 野 森 正 也) ) is a former Japanese sumo wrestler. He was the 63rd Yokozuna and now works as a coach.

Asahifuji Ringer began his career comparatively late. After the termination of a student, he had until 1981 his first official battle. In March 1982, he reached the juryo Division and exactly one year later, the Makuuchi, the highest class. Here he first fought with changing success. From 1987, its performance has stabilized, so that Asahifuji finally ascended to ozeki. There was a tournament victory in January 1988 and a number of good to excellent results, but the Sumōverband could not persuade them pronounce the promotion to yokozuna. The experience with the unsuccessful Yokozuna Futahaguro, who had rushed into this rank levied certainly played a role here. Only in 1990 Asahifuji was finally collected at the age of almost 31 years after two more tournament victories to yokozuna. In his short tenure, he could only reach another tournament victory. In January 1992, he announced his retirement from active sports after his performance last had quite taken off.

After his resignation, he was Ajigawa Oyakata and head of the house of the same name. On 30 November 2007 he took over the Isegahama content in Sumoverband and named his Heya accordingly. His most famous pupils are Aminishiki, who received the Ajigawa share, and Yokozuna Harumafuji.
