Asante Akim North Municipal District

The Asante Akim North District is one of 138 districts in Ghana. It is located in the center of the country in the Ashanti region and there one of 21 regional districts. The Asante Akim North District is bordered by the districts of Asante Akim South, Ejisu Juaben, and Sekyere East. Furthermore, the district borders the Eastern Region and has a direct border with the district Kwahu South. Chief Executive of 1462 km ² large district with about 126 465 inhabitants ( 2004), George Frimpong.

Geography

The Asante Akim North District enters the Lake Volta to the north of its territory. In the southern edge of the district, the Akwapim - Mampong mountain chain rises. A number of rivers draining the district. A well-known waterfall is located near the river Aguoso Oyem.

Much of the vegetation is tropical rain forest, which almost all of the Ashanti Uplands, in which the district is located grows over. Rainforest covers approximately 575 km ² of the district. Due to excessive logging, bush fires and agricultural slash and burn the rainforest today consists of secondary rainforest.

Economy

Important economic activity in the district is agriculture, which is, however, mainly focused on the subsistence economy. Traditional farming practices such as slash and burn play a major role.

In addition to subsistence farming and the cultivation of export goods has a meaning for the district. Here in addition to vegetables for regional trade cocoa, palm oil, shea nuts and citrus fruits are produced.

Economically important are the mineral resources, especially gold deposits. Between the field Konongo - Odumase and Juansa extends in particular between Kyekyebiase and Pekyerekye a rich gold deposit.

The rainforest is a major economic factor in a thriving timber industry dar. particular, the valuable hardwoods are cut down here and delivered to the export. Major export timbers are Wawa, Odum, Ofram, Sanfina, Okyere, Onyina, Kyenken, Otie and Yaya. In the timber industry were already developing some medium-sized companies.

Infrastructure

In addition to the Ghana Commercial Bank Ltd. , With branches in Konongo and Agogo a rural bank exists in Juansa with branches in Agogo, Odumasi and Konongo.

In the entire district 363 roads are expanded, and a 10-km long railway line to Konongo present which formerly constituted a part of the railway line Kumasi -Accra. 80 percent of the roads in the southern part of the district.

Others

Near the village Dwease there are caves in which traditional religious groups celebrate their rituals. In the vicinity of Agogo and Pataban are prehistoric caves.

In Agogo is a nationally renowned traditional festival, the Festival Akogya instead. Also in Agogo is the Afram Fetish Shrine to find.

Constituencies

In the Asante Akim North district of the same name, only one constituency was established. Kwadwo Baah Wiredu - won here for the New Patriotic Party in the parliamentary elections in 2004, the seat in the Ghanaian parliament. Baah Wiredu - is in the current government under John Agyekum Kufuor of Finance and Minister of Economic Planning.
