Asante Akim South District

The Asante Akim South District is one of 138 districts in Ghana. It is located in the center of the country in the Ashanti region and there one of 21 regional districts. The Asante Akim South District is bordered by the districts of Asante Akim North, Ejisu Juaben, and Amansie East. It also borders the Eastern Region and has a direct border with the districts Kwahu South, Kwahu West and North Birimian. Chief Executive of 1275 km ² large district with about 96 885 inhabitants ( 2004), Dr. Lord Justice Gyamfi Fenteng.

Geography

The Asante Akim South District is located in the semi- humid rainforest. Because of the important district in the timber industry is the original rainforest now grassland or secondary forest. In particular, the resident in the forests of hardwood species exported by Ghana's timber industry. Even the traditional slash and burn agriculture has contributed significantly to the change of the original forest vegetation.

In Asante Akim South prevail throughout the year relatively constant temperatures averaging 26 degrees Celsius in August to 30 degrees Celsius in March. During the rainy season from April to June and from August to October of significant proportion of the annual rainfall of 1500 mm to 1700 mm falls.

Economy

The economy of the district mainly consists of small agricultural holdings, which mostly contribute as part of a subsistence livelihood of the population.

Due to the fertile soil and abundant rainfall, mainly maize, cassava, plantains, cocoa, coffee and palm oil are produced for export and partly for the regional market and various vegetables for the local and regional market.

Near the villages Banka, Tokwai, Ofoase, Morso, Kurofa and Asankare and in the river bed of the Pra gold deposits and diamonds were found. In addition to a grain mill and a rice mill some wood-processing plants are also located in the district. Even more agricultural products such as palm oil are processed in smaller companies.

Five major market centers are used to distribute the goods. In Obogu Tuesday and Friday market is held in Adomfe, Ofoase and Kyempo Fridays and in Dampong and Juaso Sundays. The Ghana Commercial Bank Ltd. has a branch in Juaso opened, the Asante Akim Rural Bank and the Mponua Rural Bank have branches in Juaso, Obogu, Asankare and Ofoase.

Infrastructure

There are several paved trails along the main route between Accra and Kumasi, which runs through the district between the villages Nndadieso and Yawkwei to a length of 26 km. Over a length of 6 km, there is a paved path between Asankare - Bompata and recently the route Juaso - Obogu and Obogu - Ofoase - line was expanded.

Fixed lines are available in Juaso, Obogu, Kurofa, Atwedie, Asankare, Dampong and Morso. The mobile network works in the district capital Juaso and some other towns in the district. Post offices are decorated in Juaso, Atwedie, Asankare, Obogu and Bompata.

Electricity is available in all major towns of the district. These are Juaso, Obogu, Bompata, Asankare, Atwedie, Asuboa, Nkwanta, Morso, Kurofa, Adomfe, Wankyi, Asante Akim Praso and Pra River.

Only in Juaso and Obogu the population has access to piped water. In Atwidie and Bompata working on an access to the power of water. Some villages have created their own wells or set up public hand pumps for water supply.

Education and health

Spread across the entire district of the population are 81 kindergartens, 92 primary schools, 55 junior secondary schools and three senior secondary schools available. The Senior Secondary Schools have been opened in Juaso, Bompata and Ofoase. In Asankare was the Technical / Vocational Training Institute opened.

In the district capital Juaso the district hospital was set up ten more health centers were opened in Nnadieso, Bompata, Ofoase, Banka, Dwendenase, Banso, Muranaim, Morso, Obogu and Kumeso. In Obogu a privately operated birthplace was opened. In the district of another 85 traditional midwives are active and about 100 local volunteer health workers.

Constituencies

Asante Akim South, the district is an electoral district of the same name. In the parliamentary elections of 2004 won here Gifty Ohene Konadu for the New Patriotic Party seat in the Ghanaian parliament.
