Asclepeion

A asclepieion ( Ἀσκληπιεῖον ancient Greek, Modern Greek Ασκληπιείο (n. sg. ), By Asclepius, the Greek god of healing, latin Aesculapium ) is an ancient Greek sanctuary of Asclepius, usually with attached sanatorium. Approximately 300 of these treatment centers are known. Special mention deserve the facilities of Epidauros, of Trikka in Thessaly, the Asclepieion of Kos and the Asklepieia of Messene and Pergamon.

The plant in Epidaurus is the most important of its kind, it also served as a model for the construction of Kos. The asclepieion of Trikka is of particular importance, as the cult of the god Asclepius, son of Apollo and patron of healing, in Thessaly had its origin and from there took the entire Ancient Greek world. The plant on the island of Kos owes its importance Hippocrates, probably the most important physician of antiquity, who was born on Kos. Probably the sanatorium but was not built until after his death.
