Ascocentrum is a genus of the orchid family ( Orchidaceae). The genus name is currently a synonym for the genus Vanda, was merged with the Ascocentrum.

Systematics and botanical history

The genus Ascocentrum is counted for subtribe Aeridinae. Intersections with numerous allied genera, as Arachnis, Phalaenopsis, Vanda and Renanthera were realized.

Some species of the genus Ascocentrum were already known in the 19th century and were described as Saccolabium. In the years from 1913 to 1921, named Rudolf Schlechter and Johannes Jacobus Smith a total of seven species in the genus Ascocentrum. Other species have been described mainly of silk thread and Christenson from 1970. Due to DNA studies the species has now been revised and integrated into the genus Vanda.
