The Dessau Army team played from 1974 to 1991 continuously in the DDR -Liga and sparked local rivals motor Dessau for many years as a leading football team from the city. Forward played with over the entire period of the GDR - League affiliation in the upper third of the table and had an army sports community a surprisingly high average attendance.

In the years 1976 and 1984, the Dessau took as a relay winner of the DDR -Liga part in the promotion round to the highest class football DDR - Oberliga, but failed to qualify both times. In the years 1992, 1994 and 1999, the Dessauer reached the final of the National Cup, but had to bow to each higher category teams. The descent from 1998 in the League Association Saxony -Anhalt, due to numerous players disposals could be offset by the chances of promotion, even after re- descent in the 2001/ 02 season succeeded the immediate resurgence.

In subsequent years, the financial conditions deteriorated dramatically in December 2003 had to be filed for bankruptcy, the club did not start in the second half of the current season. After the dissolution of the Society of Steel Construction SV Dessau took over the football team and let them first in the 2004/05 season playing as a second team. Their successful performance led during the winter break to a cadre change, so that the former FC -Anhalt players finished the season as the SV Steel Structures I and were promoted to the first class circuit.

Despite this success, there were disagreements within the SV steel construction, so a lot of the football players on 12 April 2005 established its own association to which they gave the well-known name " ASG Vorwärts Dessau ". However, the references ASG no longer stands for " Army Community " but for " Anhaltische sports community." By eliminating the SV Anhalt to a game mode in the first Kreisklasse the ASG could take over their League place.
