Ashikaga clan

The Ashikaga family (Japanese足 利 氏, Ashikaga -shi ) was a Japanese clan which established the Muromachi shogunate. It was a branch of the Minamoto family ( Seiwa Genji - ) and many famous families are in turn on the Ashikaga, including the families Hosokawa, Imagawa, Kira, Shiba and Isshiki. After the leading family of the Minamoto clan became extinct in the early Kamakura period, the Ashikaga were often regarded as the main branch of the Minamoto.
