Ashland (formerly also Uniontown ) is a town in Ashland County, Ohio. In Ashland the county seat is ( county seat ) of the county of the same name. 2010 20 362 inhabitants lived here. The city is headed by mayor Glen P. Steward and a five-member City Council.

Geography

The area of the metropolitan area comprises 29.1 km2, of which 0.2 km2 or 0.69 % water. Ashland has 11.4 km of roads, of which are 1556 streetlights, a hospital, a fire station, a police station, in which 41 people, including officials, work and six parks.

History

The present territory of Ashland was first settled in 1811. The city was founded in 1815. Originally the settlement was called Uniontown. However, it was renamed in 1846 because there was already a place called Union City, Ohio. This year, Ashland had 1300 inhabitants, five churches, sixteen stores, two newspapers, and a private academy, were taught in both boys and girls. Ashland received city rights in 1916. Within the next 40 years, doubling the size of Ashland, reaching in 1880 a population of 3004. The municipality had this year already four newspapers, nine churches and two banks. Various industrial enterprises had settled in Ashland, none of which produced most of the goods that were consumed by the farmers in the area. Ashland is home to a university founded by the Brethan Church in 1879. 2000 Ashland was finally with a population of more than 20,000, the largest town in Ashland County. 40 % of residents of Ashland County lived here.

The 20 362 residents living in 8,063 households and 4,813 families. The population density is 704.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. In Ashland are 8,914 houses, which corresponds to a site density of 308.4 houses per square kilometer. 95.8 % of residents are white, 1.4% African American and 1.0 % Asian. In 28.2 % of households children live below the age of 18, 43.2 % live in married together in 12.1% of women live without a man. 21 % of the population are under 18, 15.7% 18-24, 22.5% 25-44, 23.1% 45-64, 17.7 % 65 or older. For every 100 females are 88 men for every 100 girls under 18 years 82 boys. The median income for a family is $ 42,755, that of men at $ 33,634 and for women about $ 21,781. About 7.9 % of families and 10.5 % of the population live below the poverty line. 4146 residents are students, who are taught by 251 teachers.
