Ashton Eaton

Ashton Eaton ( born January 21, 1988 in Portland, Oregon) is an American track and field athlete.

Eaton studied from 2006 to 2010 Psychology at the University of Oregon in Eugene. In 2008 he was the NCAA champion in the decathlon, but missed fifth of the U.S. knockouts qualifying for the Olympic Games in Beijing. The following year he won at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the heptathlon and defended his title successfully outdoors. At the U.S. Championships, he finished second behind Trey Hardee. A short time later, however, he occupied at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin only the 18th place in the decathlon, while Hardee won the gold medal.

2010 Eaton improved at the NCAA Indoor Championships the heptathlon world record of his compatriot Dan O'Brien by 23 to 6499 points. With personal bests in four individual disciplines he improved this mark in 2011 in Tallinn on 6568 points. In the same year he won the U.S. Championships in the decathlon with 8729 points, surpassing his previous best performance by 272 points. At the World Athletics Championships 2011 in Daegu he took with 8505 points, the silver medal behind the defending champion Trey Hardee.

At the IAAF World Indoor Athletics Championships 2012 in Istanbul Eaton won the title in the heptathlon with 6645 points and increased his world record, up 77 points. His lead of 574 points over second-placed Ukrainian Oleksiy Kasyanov was the largest in the history of the World Indoor Championships and his long jump performance of 8.16 m was the best over a seven- fight ever.

At the Olympic Games in London 2012 Eaton won safely the gold medal with 8869 points. About 100 meters and 400 meters and the long jump, he scored giving the best performance of all participants; in the javelin he set a new personal best.

2013 he was at the World Championships in Moscow for the first time world champion.

He is married to the Canadian athlete Brianne Theisen -Eaton

World Record

On June 23, 2012, he submitted to the U.S. qualifying competitions in Eugene ( Oregon) for the Olympic Games in London with 9039 points, a new decathlon world record, an improvement of the previous eleven years valid record of the Czech Roman Šebrle by 13 points. Eaton's performances in the 100 - meter dash ( 10.21 s ) and the long jump ( 8.23 m ) were the best that have ever been achieved within a decathlon. For this world record he received a $ 750,000 bonus payment from Nike.
