Ashtray

An ashtray (also: ash tray or ashtray ) is a receptacle for ash and butts from cigarettes, cigars, etc. Most models have ashtrays on the edge of three or more depressions, usually two in the width corresponding to the diameter of a cigarette and a in width to the diameter of a cigar. These wells are used to store burning cigarettes or cigars.

Ashtray variants

There are three dominant species of the ashtray.

The simplest shape is circular with a hollow cylindrical collecting around the bottom, similar to a flat, but in the larger diameter drinking container (glass, cup, ...), provided on the edge with the above-mentioned wells.

A different kind is approximately identical with the shape aforementioned, however, a cylindrical elevation which corresponds to the height of about two thirds of the edge in the middle. This survey prevents contact of the obtained already in the ashtray ash and cigarette butts by hand in expressing the cigarette.

A further variant is as erstgenanntes model of a cylindrical container that with a screw cap ( the outside rim has the wells ) is closed. The cigarette is not expressed herein on the bottom of the ashtray, but in the recess in the screw cap, which consists of a circular disc which is attached to the center of a spiral mounted. This spiral is fixed to a ring nut and is urged by a spring upwards. At the upper end of the spiral is a mounted handle. Now Pressing the downward spiral, the disc also lowers into the container and begins to rotate. By lowering at the same time with the rotation of the ash and optionally the cigarette butt is thrown into the ash container ( centrifugal force). The disc is thus used in addition to the transport of ash and cigarette butts also as a cover of the ash and cigarette container. This principle has been significantly improved by the Schwäbisch Gmünd company Erhard & Söhne and patented.

There are many other models, but these are rare. There would, for example, Ashtray with a mechanism which allows the ash to transport into the interior to prevent further contact (see figures below). Furthermore, there is also closable pocket portable ashtray, and those are the designed for single use. These are usually made of coated paper or aluminum material.

For smokers who like to smoke very clean, there are ashtrays to go, they are up - ed and retracted.

Sponsoring

Often with a tobacco brand logos provided ashtrays in pubs or restaurants provided by the tobacco industry or tobacco wholesale to move more smokers to buy their brand. Companies from other areas use this way of advertising such as taxi companies. In addition, ashtrays are widely used as promotional gifts. Due to the increasing restrictions on smoking in bars, restaurants and businesses can be assumed that the ashtray as an advertising medium will be rapidly declining.
