Ashur-nirari V

Ashur nirari V. (also Aschschur - nirari, Assur- nirari ) was King of the Assyrian Empire in the years around 753-746 BC ( alternative dating: 755-745 BC).

Ashur nirari V. was a son of Adad - nirari III. and followed his brother Ashur -dan III. on the throne. The kingship was in Assyria limited at this time by the influence of powerful nobles like Samsi - ilu, the Chief of the Army ( rab ummani rapši ). Normally, the Assyrian king went himself every year at the head of his troops in the war; but the Assyrian chronicles, Ashur was nirari BC " remained in the country ," 753-750, which is considered a sign of its weakened position of power. He probably had to re- establish order in the country after the uprising between 763-758 BC. He led military campaigns in the fourth and fifth year of his reign against the country Namri ( Zagrosgebiet ).

On the stele of Surb Pogos in Van reported Sarduri II of Urartu his victory over Ashur nirari: "He [ the god Haldi ] subjugated Ashur nirari, son of Adad - nirari, king of the land of Assyria. " "He threw it. feet Sarduris. This is a clash with Urartu around or shortly after 754, the victory itself may be rather urarṭäisches wishful thinking.

Towards the end of his reign, it should have come at a rebellion in Assyria; but it is not quite clear whether his successor, Tiglath- Pileser III. has to be regarded as a usurper or a relative Ashur niraris ( brother or son ) was.
