Ashur-uballit II

Ashur uballit II ( neuassyrisch Ashur uballit, Aschschur - uballit, Assur- uballit ) was the last king of Assyria 611 BC - 609 BC

Assur- uballit II was the successor (and possibly brother) of king Sin - sar iškun. As on July 28, 612 BC, the Medo- Babylonian coalition took Nineveh and Sin - sar iškun was killed, he managed a portion of the Assyrian occupation to settle to Harran. There Assur- uballit made a proclamation in the fall of the king. In the spring of 611 BC, began his first official year of reign. It was also the year of further attacks Streif Babylonian hordes, who were in search of prey. In 610 BC the entire Medo- Babylonian army marched in front of Harran. The Assyrians then withdrew to the west side of the Euphrates. The discontinued Harran was occupied by a Babylonian garrison and the other coalition forces marched off again.

In 609 BC, was Assur- II uballit some Egyptian Truppenkontigente for reinforcement. Their Pharaoh Necho II was keen to get Assyria as a buffer state against the new power in Babylonia. So the Assyrians marched eastward across the Euphrates River and began to lay siege to Harran, but in vain. After two months, they were beaten and thrown back.

The whereabouts of Assur- uballit II is not known, at least there must henceforth be no more Assyria. It is certainly no coincidence that the last ruler of Assyria after the disaster of 612 BC took the name Assur- uballit II. Was it not once been Ashur uballit I., freed from the yoke of the kingdom of Mittani Empire.
