Asiatic Society of Bangladesh

The Asiatic Society of Bangladesh ( Bengali: বাংলাদেশ এশিয়াটিক সোসাইটি ) is a non-governmental, non-profit organization based in Dhaka. It was founded in 1952 as the Asiatic Society of Pakistan, since 1972 it bears its present name. The purpose of the society is the promotion of studies on humans and nature in Asia.

The Society publishes the Banglapedia, the National Encyclopedia of Bangladesh, whose outputs are available in Bengali and English in printed form, on CD -ROM and online. It was created by more than 1,200 authors and contains about 6600 articles.

On other projects of the company are to name especially:

  • The "Encyclopedia of Flora and Fauna of Bangladesh", a comprehensive compendium of species richness of Bangladesh in 28 volumes
  • The "Cultural Survey of Bangladesh ," a documentary of the cultural history and tradition of Bangladesh in 12 volumes
  • The "Children's Banglapedia ", a child-friendly edition of the Banglapedia in three volumes

The roots of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh dates back to 1784, founded by Sir William Jones Asiatic Society of Bengal. The foundation of today's society, considerable progress was made by the archaeologist, historian and linguist Ahmad Hasan Dani, the participation of other well-known scientists such as Muhammad Shahidullah, Abu Mohamed Habibullah Abdul Halim and. Patron of the Society is the President of the Republic.
