Asikkala

Asikkala [ ˌ ɑsik kɑlɑ ] is a town in southern Finland. It is located about 20 km north of the city of Lahti in south lakeland

Geography

The present capital of the municipality is Vääksy, it lies on an isthmus between Lakes Vesijärvi in the south and in the north Päijänne. The two lakes were connected by the completion in 1871 of the 1,315 -meter-long Vääksy channel. He is now one of the busiest waterways in Finland. Vessels must overcome in their passage to a lock. Another channel, which is also exactly 1,315 meters long Kalkkinen channel was completed in 1875 and connects the lakes Päijänne and Ruotsalainen.

Attractions

The most striking building of the Church is the built 1878-80 Protestant parish church in the village Asikkala, which offers an unusual decoration for the Finnish Protestantism rich interior.

The municipal area is also the airfield Lahti Vesivehmaa ( ICAO code EFLA ) is a connected Aviation Museum, which some historical military aircraft exhibits not only the Finnish Air Force.

A part of the municipality is part of the Päijänne national parks, including the Pulkkilanharju, an eight kilometer long, but sometimes only a few meters wide headland in Päijänne.
