Askersund

Askersund is a locality ( tätort ) in the Swedish province of Orebro Lan and capital of the municipality of the same name. The settlement received town rights in 1643 which awarded today, however, have no legal significance.

The village lies on the edge of the forest area Tivedens and am See Alsen, which is connected by a narrow channel with the lake Vättern. The largest source of income is tourism, as there are popular beaches and campsites here.

History

The site was created at the beginning of the 17th century. 1884 a 14 km long narrow gauge railway to the place Lerbäck was built where connection was to another rail line. At times, there were also connections with steam ships to Stockholm, Gothenburg and at different locations on the Vättern. In the 19th century there were in Askersund own weekly newspaper, Askersunds veckoblad.
