Askola

Askola [ ɑskɔlɑ ] is a municipality with 4991 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in southern Finland. It is located on the lower reaches of the river Porvoonjoki in the coastal hinterland just north of the port city of Porvoo. In contrast to Porvoo Askola is monolingual Finnish.

Community

The main towns of the community are founded in 1896 the eponymous place Askola and Monninkylä. The municipality also includes the villages Huuvari, Juornaankylä, Korttia, Nalkkila, Nietoo, Puhar - Onkimaa, Särkijärvi, Tiilää, Vahijärvi and Vakkola.

History

Not far from Askola was reduced by 7500 BC by the people of the Askola culture in a quarry quartz rock.

Attractions

Worth seeing is the built in 1797-99 wooden church in which a richly decorated pulpit is that came here as spoils of Finnish mercenaries during the Thirty Years' War from a German church.

About seven kilometers north of Askola is Hiidenkirnut, an area with significant glacial potholes.
