ASME

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME ) is a professional association of mechanical engineers in the United States. The association, based in New York City was founded in 1880 and covers approximately 120,000 members (as of 2005).

The association focuses on

  • The promotion of science and engineering technology through the organization of conferences and symposia,
  • Training by organizing courses and lecture,
  • The development of technical guidelines and standards.

The ASME is divided into 37 professional societies, such as for aircraft construction, materials engineering, nanotechnology, ( nuclear) power plant engineering, railroad engineering, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, pressure vessel and piping technology.

To include ASME district associations in many countries outside the United States. A district association in Germany there is not currently ( 2005 ).

From the ASME books and journals are published as the Journal of Mechanical Engineering monthly.

In many countries of the world ASME standards are used. The knowledge and application of these standards is therefore also important for many Germany-based companies to export goods and services.

In Germany, the Association of German Engineers (VDI ) is satisfied in many areas a similar function as the ASME.
