Asolo

Asolo is a town in the province of Treviso in the Veneto region, with 8988 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Geography

Asolo is located about 40 km northwest of Treviso and 15 km east of Bassano del Grappa.

Neighboring municipalities are:

Altivole, Castelcucco, Fonte, Maser, Monfumo, Paderno del Grappa and Riese Pio X.

History

The hills of Asolo were already settled in the 7th and 6th centuries BC by the Venetians. Ruins of thermal baths and a theater which bear witness to the Roman city Acelum. Various Signorie prevailed in Asolo, until it came under Venetian rule.

1489 the young noblewoman Caterina Cornaro was married to the King of Cyprus to ensure the supremacy of Venice in the Mediterranean. After his assassination, she was compelled to abdicate the crown. In return they received Asolo as a domain and resided there with her entourage at the Castello della Regina to 1509th were famous their festivals with spectacles and tournaments.
