Asotin County, Washington

Asotin County is a county located in the state of Washington of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Asotin, largest city is Clarkston.

History

The county was established in 1883 from parts of Garfield County. The name of the county comes from the language of the Nez Perce Indians and means " Aalfluss ".

Geography

The County is located in the extreme southeastern Washington, bordered to the east and south by the states of Idaho and Oregon and borders clockwise to the county: Whitman County, Nez Perce County ( Idaho), Wallowa County ( Oregon) and Garfield County.

According to the census of 2000, there were 20,551 people in the county. There were 8,364 households and 5,654 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.62 % White, 0.19 % African American, 1.27 % Native American, 0.51 % Asian, 0.02 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 0.63 % from other races groups; 1.77% were descended from two or more races. 1.95% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 8,364 households out of which 31.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.40 % were married couples living together, 11.90% had a female householder with no husband. 32.40 % were non-families. 27.00% of all households and 11.70 % had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.91.

Based on the county the population was spread out with 25.50 % under the age of 18, 8.10 % from 18 to 24, 26.10% from 25 to 44 years, 24.00 % between 45 and 64 years and 16.30 % were 65 years old or older. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 91.10 males, 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.30 males.

The median income for a household was $ 33,524, and the median income for a family was $ 40,592. Males have a median income of $ 35,810, women $ 22,218. The per capita income was $ 17,748. 15.40% of the population and 11.60% of families are below the poverty line. 22.70% of those under age 18 and 6.70% were 65 years or older.
