Aspet, Haute-Garonne

Aspet is a commune with 953 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Haute- Garonne in the Midi-Pyrénées region; it belongs to the arrondissement of Saint- Gaudens and the Canton Aspet whose capital it is.

Geography

The village lies at the foot of the Pyrenees, about 15 kilometers southeast of Saint- Gaudens, on the right bank of the river Ger

History

Aspet is first mentioned in the 11th century, and was then still Spel (1068), then later called " Espel ". At that time - 1068 - occurs on the first Seigneur d' Aspet, Ramon -At ( hon ). Arnaud II d' Aspet 1190 took part in the Third Crusade. In the 15th century the barony passes to the Coarraze family, and later to the Counts of Foix from the house Comminges. Their heritage, King Henry IV, Aspet added into the Domaine royal.
