The tubed asphodel ( asphodel fistulosus ) is a species of the genus asphodel ( asphodel ) in the subfamily Asphodelus ( Asphodeloideae ).

Features

The tubed asphodel is an annual or short-lived perennial herbaceous plant, the plant height of 15 to 90 (150 ) reaches centimeters. Her numerous roots are slender and not thickened. The leaves are united in a basal rosette, semi- terete, hollow, blue-green, bald and have at the base a membranous margin. They measure 5 to 35 × 0.1 to 0.5 centimeters.

The stalk is leafless, hollow and carries a branched or unbranched, rarely simple, racemose inflorescence. The bracts of the flowers are trockenhäutig. The flower stalks are divided in the middle and are steeply upright during fruiting time. The six ovate - elliptical and flat-out tepals measure from 7.5 to 13.5 × 3-6 mm, and are white or pale pink with a pink, green or brown midrib.

The flowering period extends from March to May

The inverted - ovate to almost spherical capsule fruits measure 4-6 × 3.5 to 6 millimeters.

Occurrence

The tubed asphodel comes in the Mediterranean area, in Sinai, in the Canary Islands and in Western Arabia on rock corridors, fallow fields and waste places at elevations up to 800 meters in front. He was naturalized in all areas with a Mediterranean climate.

Use

The tubed asphodel is rarely used as an ornamental plant in borders and rock gardens.
