Assef Shawkat

Assif Shawkat (Arabic آصف شوكت, DMG Asif Saukat; born January 15, 1950 in Al- Madehleh at Tartus, † July 18, 2012 in Damascus ) was major general and since 2009 Deputy of the Syrian chiefs of staff. Previously, he spent four years long head of Syrian military intelligence.

Life

Shaukat was a member of the Alawite community of faith. Shavkat served as a volunteer in the Syrian army and rose to major general. He studied pharmacy at the University of Damascus. In the 1980s he met Bushra al -Assad, the daughter of the then President Assad, whom he married in 1995. Shaukat was thus a brother of President Bashar al -Assad.
